Summer Trip 2026 Day 2

It was chilly in Victor NY this morning, 51º, but the skies were clear and I had a pretty easy 376 mile drive on I-90 through western NY, across a bit of PA, and well into OH.

There was a lot of construction but it didn’t slow me down much, although I was very happy I wasn’t trying to go the other direction as traffic heading into Cleveland from the West was barely moving.

Since I left my hotel in Victor NY with just 78% SOC (State of Charge), my first stop was after 124 miles at a Tesla Supercharger in Fredonia NY (having stopped for a bathroom break at the Angola Service Plaza a few miles earlier). This was an older V3 location with 12 chargers — one of which was in the distance and clearly designed for vehicles with trailers — but it’s in the parking lot for a run-down yet oddly still busy Denny’s which is why I didn’t plan to use the bathroom here. I arrived with 33% and charged to 80% in 21 minutes, adding 43.477 kW at a cost of $17.82. The charging rate was 125 kW until 74% when it dropped to 110 kW. The car got 3.1 miles/kWh on this segment.

I stopped a few miles later at the Welcome Center just across the border in Pennsylvania because it was such a beautiful morning and I knew I could get a good photo of vineyards and Lake Erie from there. Here you go!

My second charging stop was at IONNA in Willoughy OH, a location I’ve been at several times before. It’s associated with a Sheetz gas station and those are great places to stop — good bathrooms and every snack you’d care to have for your journey! This IONNA has 4 NACS and 6 CCS1 plugs; there were two cars using CCS1 and I was the only one at NACS. The car got 3.3 miles/kWh getting here from Fredonia. I arrived with 36% SOC and got to 80% in 15 minutes. Charging speed peaked at 241 kW and I added 39.764 kW for $15.11. This was also my first opportunity to test Hyundai’s recently-enabled “Plug-and-Charge” capability and it worked flawlessly.

Tonight, I’m in Maumee OH with the temperature hanging around 80º ad just a few clouds in the sky with a nice breeze. Here’s the few from my room:

For the trip so far, I’m at 675.2 miles, 11 hours and 9 minutes of driving, and 3.1 miles/kWh. So far, so good … and tomorrow evening I’ll be in Iowa City IA.

[Later …] As the sun got lower in the sky, I noticed something on the move in that green area across from my hotel room, several somethings in fact — there were at least three groundhogs and several bunnies enjoying a late dinner!
