Road Trip 2017, Day Two

Today started by watching massive thunderstorms rolling through northern Ohio on the weather radar while I wondered whether I was going to be able to shoot any archery. I waited to leave my hotel until after the worst had passed, and started out driving in rain. Forty minutes later, I was at Punderson State Park, where it was sunny and uncompromisingly humid.

The archery range has targets at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 80 yards. As I rarely shoot at a distance greater than 20 yards at home, everything over 30 yards gets quite “interesting.” After some practice, I considered my shots at 40 yards acceptable. 50 yards was not terribly embarrassing, and was definitely no worse than 40 yards was just a year ago. Eventually, I even managed a decent hit on the 80 yard target! Unlike last year, when I was unable to even hit the darned thing, I was lined up correctly this year and only had to deal with making myself raise my aim point high enough to compensate for the distance. When I finally did hit it, the arrow was exactly where I wanted it side-to-side and just 6″ low. At that point, I chose not to press my luck any further!

After a grand total of 330 miles driving for the day (hardly enough to matter), I ended at Territorial Brewing just outside of Battle Creek, MI. I had stopped here last summer and loved it; it’s just as good this year, and I can honestly say that their schnitzel is far better than mine (and mine beats any restaurant schnitzel we’ve had in our area). My plan for tonight is to sleep better than last night (Robitussin DM should help with that – I actually got carded when I bought it!). Tomorrow morning, I head northeast to East Lansing for breakfast with an old friend, then I’ll meander southwest along back roads to Michigan City, IN.

Once again, here are some links for large video files if you feel the need to watch them. The first two are on 1-second intervals so are less dizzying; the third is a 2-second interval and matches yesterday’s videos in that regard.
