2019 Summer Road Trip, Day 9
I’m at the point in the trip where I have to look at previous entries to see what day number this is, and at my watch or phone to see what day of the week it is. This means I’m having a very successful vacation 🙂
I left Omaha this morning and was very soon across the border into Iowa, but not before traveling among many acres of flooded fields and destroyed crops. It was sad to see, especially given the rampant denial of climate change and our country’s refusal to make any concerted effort to reverse our contributions to it.
Breakfast was in Iowa as I had no interest in even looking at the free food in last night’s dump of a hotel. I took this picture after breakfast and it shows a bit of the Iowa countryside — rolling hills with farmland and trees vs. Nebraska’s (and Kansas’) flatland vistas with few trees.

I spent the day on secondary highways driving to Peoria IL, and saw very little traffic. Whether that was because today was a Sunday or not, I don’t know, but I certainly wasn’t about to complain! Along the way, I stopped at a couple of little roadside parks to use the bathrooms, and one of them had this interesting (to me, at least) old warped and rusted picnic table:

It was an easy day’s drive overall, just around 370 miles or so, ending at a fascinating brewpub in Peoria. Check out the other blog for photos of that place!
Tomorrow will be more backroads driving as I head up to Saugatuck MI for 3 nights on the Lake Michigan shore. Mountains and water are my zen locations … I intend to explore a little but mostly relax while I’m in Saugatuck. Photos will be posted, though!
