Summer 2021, Day 13

Today started with an oil change and tire rotation (and complementary car wash!) at the local Hyundai dealership, then I headed west to see the Oregon coastline.

I can’t exactly say the drive was relaxing because there was heavy (and often annoying) traffic most of the way, but it certainly was beautiful. In retrospect, I wish I’d pulled over several times to capture views from the drive west as I went through old-growth forests and along stunning rivers. There just wasn’t any good place to pull over, though, at least, not in the most scenic sections.

Once I got to the coast (which reminded me a lot of the Big Sur area of California), I did finally spot a not-too-busy pull-off parking area and walked down to the beach. (Later, I was told that the water is far too cold here to go in.)

I was surprised at how rocky the shore was, but it fit in with the general ruggedness of the land.

Part of this route took me on the most western segment of US 20 as well, a highway I’ve lived close to for many years. Perhaps some day I’ll drive it coast-to-coast … and if I do, you can be sure I’ll be back at Dirt Road Brewing in Philomath OR for a meal!!
