Fall Trip 2025 Day 15
27 September 2025
Today was the second longest driving day of the trip, beat only by the first day exactly two weeks ago. I drove 423 miles from Hilliard OH to Painted Post NY.

This is a route I’ve driven many, many times so I didn’t stop for any photos. Surprisingly, I only saw two hawks on today’s drive — normally, I’d expect to see many more. The first was as I was driving on Fishinger Road into Upper Arlington OH and the second was in New York State somewhere east of Jamestown.
I started the day at 100% so I was only down to 43% when I made my first charging stop at the IONNA in Willoughby OH that I’ve been to several times before. This location has 6 CCS1 plugs and 4 NACS plugs; three of the CCS1 were in use when I arrived so I had no problem plugging in and getting the session started as these chargers are pretty fool-proof. They’re located at a Sheetz so you have clean bathrooms and lots of snacks available, and they provide trashcans and window washing squeegees at the chargers. I took on 30.678 kWh to get back to 80%; this took 15 minutes and cost $12.45. I was very pleased to see that IONNA has dropped their prices! This location used to be $0.50/kWh but is now $0.38 with a session fee added on.
After eating Second Meal™️ in Jamestown NY, I drove a short distance to the EvolveNY (Electrify America) chargers where I plugged in for free. All 6 chargers were available and I charged from 34-80% in 13 minutes, adding 37.518 kWh.
The Hampton Inn in Painted Post NY used to have three free chargers available, but I had a suspicion those were going away when I saw on a previous trip that they were installing new chargers — 10 of them — in another part of the parking lot. Sure enough, the free chargers are now tagged “Out of Order” and only the new chargers, on the ChargeSmartEV network, are available. They’re wicked expensive but paying for charging here will save me a charging stop tomorrow, so that’s a tradeoff I was willing to make (this time — I probably will not stay at this hotel in the future, or will plan my charging differently). I’ll update the post tomorrow morning once I know how much electricity I added and what it cost.
My efficiency on the three legs of today’s trip was 3.6 miles/kWh, 3.5, and 3.4, respectively, leaving me with exactly 3.5 miles/kWh for the day. With the entire day spent on interstates at 71-73 mph and through hilly terrain, I’m quite happy with that! My overall trip efficiency dropped one tenth to 3.8, leaving me hopeful that I’ll end up at 3.7 after tomorrow’s drive. Here’s where I am right now, and I have just over 300 miles to drive tomorrow:

[The next morning …]
Wow, that was an expensive charging session! I rather wish I’d taken the hit of an extra charging stop today instead. I added 63.017 kWh in close to 7.5 hours, and the killer was the cost — $47.49. Needless to say, if I do ever stay here again, I most certainly will NOT charge here!! This was more than the double my cost to charge at home, and we have very expensive electricity where I live.
